March 2008

Focus of the Month for March
Meditation and Marichyasana 1-4
In this month of March, just before the spring rises irrepressibly through the resting earth, meditation will be our focus. Meditation invites us to turn our periscopic eyes inward and observe what really is. It is a way for us to consider, contemplate, and reflect before the springtime burst of baby leaves, when crocuses and tulips will start dancing around our senses.

There are many different techniques of meditation but essentially their aims at the outset are the same; Meditation is prolonged concentration.

The second part of our focus deals with the body in meditation. As you know it can be particularly uncomfortable sitting for a prolonged period of time; therefore we will work on the marichyasana series (look to Light on Yoga plates 143-147 and 301-306) These are deep hip and shoulder openers, forward bends and twists. This will be lot to cover, and for those of us with extra tight hips we will explore many helpful modifications.
