Dvesha
for Sandi and Carla

Since my mother hated beets,
I always refused them—

until one night at a diner,
a friend insisted, try them.

The blood of one single purplish-red globe
dripping across the formica table,

the thing speared between the tines of my fork,
how much we kill before killing,

all that we deny, all the white lies,
who or what are we protecting?

And how many of us are running from
and running to: pleasure, yes;

pain, no. And how easy it is to lock a door,
one half turn of the wrist and safe,

but from what?
During meditation, Carla says:

Try to taste your own heart
and I return to this, new to the city,

with a new friend after midnight,
dank, brave and earthy bite—

I was hooked. Though it took years for me
to peel my own, let my own hands be stained,

because after all, how can any of us escape
the beat of Shiva's drum,

our own our magenta desire
without noticing how rich the color

of blood, our lives, bubbling up
from an open wound before we

apply the band-aid, and kiss
our pain away.

Class Descriptions

Basic
Designed for those who are new to yoga, or anyone who wishes to ease into fundamental asanas, and pranayama, as they are carefully introduced. Also, check out the For Beginners page for more information about starting your practice.

Intermediate
This level of practice is meant to be a bridge between the basic and open level. So, if you have well advanced in your basic level class and are curious about the open classes but think it a daunting idea to just jump into the open level try this first.

Open
Energizing postures that develop strength and flexibility are combined with coordinated breath and movement (vinyasa) to release tensions held in the body. This class is not for beginners you should have at least 9 months experience.

Restorative (aka Deep Relaxation)
This class has one sole aim: deep mindful rest. You will be exposed to a combination of restorative yoga poses (using props to assist in asana), breath observation and guided meditation exercises. These techniques are used to usher your mind body and spirit into a state of deep relaxation. A great class is you wish to reduce stress in your daily life.

Open / Restorative
This is a wonderful mid-week class with 2/3 open level practice and 1/3 restorative (yoga with the support of props to aid a deeply relaxed state). The open level vinyasa practice will get you moving and the restorative practice will deeply calm you down to help you rest for the night.

Meditation
We offer 2 weekly sitting meditation sessions Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:45-9:15 am. The sittings are non-directive. Please come bring your practice, sit with us.
